On y trouve déjà ce mélange d'espoir et de noirceur qui fera sa marque plus tard, à travers le portrait d'un jeune homme (Demy lui-même, sobre) bouleversé par une rupture et tenté par le suicide. On suit ses égarements moraux durant une nuit : gestes désabusés (on passe devant un miroir en se frottant la tête), ennui (on fume sa clope sur un lit de chambre de bonne) ou tentations fatales (on fait couler un mystérieux liquide sombre dans un verre).
